China's 60-Mile Traffic Jam Could Last a Month

Thousands of drivers have spent the past nine days trapped in a 60-mile traffic jam on China's National Expressway 100, state-run media reported on Monday, and authorities say that the deadlock could last as long as a month. While as many as 17,000 trucks use the Beijing-Tibet route every day, congestion hit a new low when construction work began on Aug. 14, and fender-benders and minor accidents have since made delays worse. Officials have deployed 400 police officers to keep things under control, but so far, there haven't been any reports of violence, and drivers have passed time by playing chess and card games. According to the Global Times, roadside vendors have also aggravated drivers by overcharging them for food and water. "Instant noodles are sold at four times the original price while I wait in the congestion," one driver complained the Global Times. "Not only the congestion annoys me, but also those vendors," he remarked.
